What is the best way to get sponsored for a triathlon?

Jim B asked:

So I’ve been training for the past 5-6 months for a triathlon - my first ever. I’m extremely confident in my abilities right now, but with money being tight, I was wondering if it was possible to get sponsored for a triathlon, and also what is the best way to go about it. It would be best if I could get sponsored by someone who would benefit my triathlon (i.e. a rec center would provide me with a pool to train in), but honestly at this point I’ll take anything.

So basically I’m wondering the best way to present to someone a request for sponsorship, and also what are the best places to ask. Thanks.

I’ve come across the same issue. There are a few things I would suggest, first is check in your area for clubs/teams that are already sponsored that you might be able to join. It is more beneficial for a company to sponsor a group that will purchase their products at a discount rather than an individual, which is why it is so difficult to get sponsored without already being an elite triathlete. Second, go to loopd.com and set up a profile. It is a site focussed on sponsorships for athletes of all kinds. I got my first sponsorship through this site. Lastly, become more active in your local triathlon community. The more you get your name out there, the more other people will be confident in your abilities, which is essential if you want to get sponsors. Just remember, sponsorship is a two-way road. The sponsors are looking to get something out of the deal also, whether it be getting their name out there, or getting a tri club to buy and use their products. Good luck!
